Possible Health Hazard?

Dear fellow laptop users,

This blog began with the discovery that others (like myself) are suffering from a painful and debilitating condition known as Meralgia Paresthetica - but in all probability caused by the prolonged use of a laptop... on my lap.

In my case, the laptop is a Compaq Presario V5000 (V5303 NR) and I suspect that this particular model may be a specific health hazard (other laptops may cause the same condition as well).

However, it seems that few people who suffer from these symptoms (tingling, burning, pain sensation, loss of sensation, building up to extreme pain attacks - in the upper leg or thigh) make the connection with laptop usage. After all, a "laptop" is assumed to be safe to use on your lap... but is it?

My personal experience is that of tremendous pain and concern, until I figured out what was going on. The symptoms have improved since I decided never to use this laptop as a "lap top."

I will be posting more information on this situation and links to whatever articles I can find. The symptoms in my case were so severe as to make me consider a class action lawsuit against HP / Compaq in particular.

Please consider adding to this blog and contacting me at iccou@truevine.net

Are laptops a health hazard? Considering the amount of heat and radiation emitted so close to your skin, muscles and nerves - users should be highly concerned and an investigation seems in order...

Hi. I came across your blog today. I don't know if you're still checking in with it, but I was curious to know if your condition improved at all. I, too, have been diagnosed with meralgia paresthetica. It coincided with some back problems, for which I wore a back brace for about 10 days. The doctor thinks the tight brace might be responsible for my condition. But I've since seen reference to laptop use causing similar symptoms, and it turns out that for about two years I've been in the habit of using my laptop in bed before going to sleep -- sitting in bed with my laptop on my lap.

So, as I'd mentioned, I was curious to know if your condition has improved and what you might have done to help it.

All the best.

For several months, I have been having the same symptoms you described in your blog.I went to the er one night because I thought I might have a blood clot. After many tests, the doctors were puzzled by my complaints.

I even wake from sleep with a sharp stabbing pain in my thigh.A very hot intense pain. After not getting any answers from the doctors, I was using the computer one day & I realized that the laptop was most likely causing my problems.I felt very stupid at first because I thought, how did I not realize I was causing this pain. But then I started researching(but without the laptop on my lap) the web to see if others were having this problem.I am now wondering if the pain is temporary or if the laptop has caused permanent health problems. I hope you are still checking this blog. Please let me know if you are doing better or if you are still bothered with pain.
Sincerely, Kim

I just discovered your blog and comments about 'Thigh Pain'. For about 9 weeks now I've been experiencing similar conditions to my upper left thigh and it occurred to me that it may be caused by the prolonged use of a lap desk upon which I work using my IBM notebook. I have been using it (the lap desk and laptop) for several months now while lying in bed.

Please, if you would, keep me informed if you should find out if what is causing your condition may be the same which is causing mine.

Thank you.

Just found your blog while looking for information on leg pain I have been suffering terrible leg , hip & knee pain for the past 7mts.Pain is like a nerve shooting down to lodge in knee. Had all kinds of treatment with no lasting results. It has crossed my mind on several occasions that it could be the laptop.
Has anyone found a cure??

I am convinced of a causal relationship between use of my laptop on my lap and the leg tingling, loss of sensation, burning, and discomfort I feel every time I use the laptop. My first solution: I now use a lap desk for prolonged laptop use, which helps, but I can still feel a more subdued set of the same symptoms. I have reduced the time I spend working with the laptop on my lap because I am concerned about the damage that may be ensuing. Such a forum is a good start to find out how others are affected by laptop use; I’d like to hear from more of you out there.

Unknown said...

It is possible that the laptop can be causing a problem, however I do think if you are sitting in a chair working on the computer for a long period of time it is most likely a issue with your lumbar.

I too have very bad left thigh pain that seems to have begun when I began using my Toshiba laptop on my legs. I have no pain in the right thigh. The pain does go away if I do not use the laptop for a few days but it immediately returns even if I set the computer on my thighs for 5 minutes. I have no signs of toasted skin syndrome on my thigh skin.
The pain at night can be really bad and in no way is it linked to positioning.
Please lets find out more!

I was actually looking this up to prove to my family that this actually does happen to me. They thought I was crazy. The laptop causes pain in my thighs when I am using it on my lap. If I don't put something under it, it will cause my thigh muscles to start twitching. The pain is definitely concentrated where the laptop is and goes away when I take the laptop off. It makes me concerned about what is happening to people who place laptops on more sensitive locations and don't seem to know to stop.

I had the same laptop and have the same symptoms!

I do believe this is a back issue.
Let's face it, if you are sitting with the laptop on your lap for a period of time you most definitely are not sitting is a proper position but most likely slouching. Back pain will refer down leg.

This is not a back problem, I sit with good back support and have been having these painful symptoms for months. It's got so bad that even a slight knock on my leg hours after last using the laptop is very painful.

My laptop is a Sony Vaio, I think that this problem will apply to all laptops. I use a cooling fan and I bought a laptop desk but it is too high for my chair and likely to cause back problems if I use it.

As I own around 30 websites my use is extensive. I bought the laptop because I wan't comfortable working on my desktop for long periods of time, but now I am worried that it has caused permament harm. Has anybody found a cure for this besides not using a laptop?

Unknown said...

I am having the same problem, and I realized every time I use my laptop and place it on my lap, I experience pain in my upper legs. I have stopped using the laptop and now use my desktop, and the pain has gone away. I really believe the laptop is causing the pain. There needs to be a study on this!

After looking at the following website I don't feel I have Meralgia Paresthetica as my pain is on my lap... top of my legs, closer to my knees and the same length x width as my laptop... not my outer thigh. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meralgia_paraesthetica

After putting 2 and 2 together, I'm not going to use my laptop on my lap and see if the pain ceases. If anyone has talked to a medical expert, or has come across study information, please contact me at novermberrain1960@live.com with LAPTOP PAIN in the subject area. Thanks!

According to the information at the following link, I don't believe I have Meralgia Paresthetica. My pain is not in my outter thigh, but right above me knees and the width and length of my laptop.

Just found this, I too started having pain in the top of my leg, right down to my testicles, I had blood tests, ultrasound scan, all came back clear. Doctors couldn't work out what was wrong but then someone suggested it could be the fact I use a laptop all day, every day. I'm not trying to use a cushion between my lap and laptop to see if it improves.

i know what you guys are talking about... you can check the articel in the journal "clinical rheumatology, 1995, volume 14, issue 5, page 593-594". there is a description of a patient (myself...) in a hospital because of low back pain, but still working for several hours a day on a laptop. that's when i experienced the laptop meralgia for the first time....
short extract from the articel: "To our knowledge, this is the first description of a bilateral mechanical injury to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve by using a laptop computer in supine position. There was no other cause for the simultaneously bilateral meralgia paresthetica in this patient. The fact that symptoms reappeared after reexposure argue in favour of the previously mentioned aetiology for the meralgia in this case. Because of growing use of laptop computers by patients clinicians should be alert of this complica- tion."
almost 20 years later, i still have these irritations sometimes, eventhough i have never used the laptop on my lap anymore. (nowadays my laptop is replaced by an ipad anyway...)

I also have experienced thigh aches from my laptop. Have you successfully found an answer as to what in the laptops causes this?

I also am getting this pain-mine is so bad that if I was brave enough I would cut my leg off...now I am getting cramps in my stomach and throat. I have tried pills and they help for a little while but always comes back. It is worse then any cramp I have had through out my years. The Doctors have no idea what I am describing and they make me feel like I am nuts.
It feels like my bone is getting the life choked out of it-it feels dead and the pain is the worst.
My laptop is on a little cushioned table and I find this pain comes after a day of not drinking much water and I am busy on my legs all day...I any advise would be appreciated...

I recently went to my doctor because of having pain in my right thigh. I don't have the tingling or back-ache. But the pain is there and I definitely associate it with placing my laptop on my lap while using it. My doctor didn't seem to be as concern about it as I am. Can anyone with the same symptoms let me know if they go away with time.

Thanks!!

Hello readers,
I too suffer from the above mentioned condition. I noticed an intense burning pain one day in my thigh will using my laptop, well in my lap. I first thought it was just the battery overheating from not using a hard surface under the computer which would inhibit the fan’s operational cooling function. However, after several days had passed I continued to have the same sensation in the same location; that was about three months ago. I continue to have a numb, to sometimes intense burning sensation, in that general area around the meralgia paresthetica nerve. The pain is increased as the use of my laptop, even on my desk, is increased. I have yet to seek medical attention for the problem for fear of just throwing money away to a doctor that will have not solution to the issue. Upon reading this blog I now realize that there must be a growing number of individual who suffer from this, therefore an answer must be out there. If you have any answers or have had any positive results from treatment please post them.
Sincerely,
Josh R.

Same thing with me, I retired a some months ago and have been spending allot more time with my laptop on my lap, partially reclined in my retirement recliner. My right thigh goes numb, cold to touch, but on fire. Some nights almost unbearable sharp pain. Icy hot helps. Thought I might have shingles that haven't erupted yet. Thought it might be Meralgia Paresthetica but it's on top of my thigh and not the side, since I have back problems, but that doesn't fit the pain area according to Web MD. Got a doctors appointment tomorrow and going to cancel it until I do more research. Why haven't we heard a warning about this issue, it's been going on for many years now?

Robin S said...

I have recently experienced the same symptoms, although the numbness radiates down the center of both legs below the knee. Pins and needles or tight feeling. I have wondered in it is due to spending numerous hours lately sitting in a recliner with the laptop on my thighs while wearing shorts. Seeing all the other comments, I will stop doing this and see if it gets better. Thanks to all

Add me...I'm feeling tingling & numbing sensation with my Apple right where my laptop lie's above the knee middle of my thigh mostly on my left leg. It isn't there unless my laptop is on my legs. Has anyone done a study on this? Now I really do wonder how they are affecting our health just through air waves.

For about three years I used my HP Pavilion type dv1265ea on my lap. Then I noticed deep muscle pain left thigh. I feel no heat on my skin but even with a metal tray and cushion below the lap top I still get the pain - next will be a sheet of roofing lead !
Meantime I put the laptop on the arm of my chair. But I think I have permanent muscle damage as I get pain even if the laptop is not on my lap.
I took apart the laptop and found that the CPU and fan are directly above the site of the pain - definitely no coincidence !
Now there are three types of radiation and as far as I can make out the cause must be Beta which is high energy electrons -these should be stopped by lead so this will be my next investigation.

I too have been having this numbing stabbing pain in my left thigh. It is definitely a deep pain. It has something to do with my laptop. In the beginning it only happened while having the laptop on my lap but now it even happenings if it is on the bed 2-3 feet away.
This has been happening for about 3 years. My son's newest apple laptop seems to better than our older one.
I don't understand why it is only my left leg? Maybe something to do with energy in the body?

Is anyone still experiencing this pain? I have had mine on my left quad for 3 years now. Sometimes it's a stabbing pain, but lately more of a dull ache.

I put two-and-two together around 2 years ago and stopped using my HP laptop. But my pain still exists. Sometimes it gets really bad. When I went to the doctor 1 year ago he said it was an old quad injury. (I never have injured my quad) He did a quick ultrasound but only saw what he called irregular striation of the muscle or something like that. Sent me away with some exercises.

I feel I need to go back as it seems to be moving to a chronic condition, but honestly I feel like the doctor thinks I'm crazy when I describe the pain. Sometimes just touching the area hurts and most of the time it is very localized to one exact spot.

Any follow up from other experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I get exactly the same . Sharp uncomfortable shooting restless pains in my legs . For months I wondered what could be the cause and realised it's usually a Sunday evening which is when I mainly use my work laptop at home. I started using a little table kinfront of the sofa and I no longer get this uncomfortable feeling all night . I can now sleep . Thanks all for sharing I'm not alone :-)

A couple of years back I found this site looking to see if my HP 2004 laptop was a certain cause of the thigh "pain" right under where it's fan is positioned; i.e. in it's left hand top corner. I have since then used the laptop perched on the arem of my large lounge chair - no more pain.
If I do put laptop back on lap then within a few seconds the irritation on my left thigh starts.
Even a metal tray does nothing to stop the "radiation". What did stop it was when I made, from plywood, a double tray. The top tray has a hole 200mm square and into this hole I fitted the front of a fan to blow onto the base of the laptop- the laptop seemed to be getting hotter than normal. The laptop was/is 16mm above the top tray to which it is sealed by resting on a 10mm dia rubber tube. The fan is about 120mm deep. The forgoing arangement is some what bulky so I just use the arm of the chair.

Just like everyone else on here, Ive been having problems too. I am currently awaiting results of blood tests, since I have been feeling so fatigued and hip & more recently knee problems. I have always had a bit of a bad back and just get on with it, but this Winter the pain moved into my hips and more recently my knee to the point that last week I was almost crippled with the pain, unable to walk properly. Joints burning up. I did have a lot of stress last week and I know that this caused it to worsen much more. I had gone for an xray on my knee about 5 weeks ago, as had pain and difficulty walking with it. The fatigue was my big concern though as just so tired all the time. I am currently awaiting results of blood tests, but just this morning when I sat down and put the laptop on my legs my legs started throbbing straight away!! ---- I can actually believe I have been so stupid as to use my laptop on my legs again of late! I had had a laptop tray but the heat was coming through the tray and I threw it out and moved the laptop up to a desk, however had back pain with sitting there and after a while I ended up just in the habit of sitting on the couch and picking putting laptop on my legs again. At times I remember to put a book under it, but not always -- thinking I wont be on for long and of course time just goes by. This makes so much sense to me! .. Will see what bloods say ( I was thinking Rhuematoid Arthritis!) just with my joints being sore -- hips knee - ( also my back and abdomen! ) -- and has gone right down to my ankles now too. So glad to have found this site, I'll come back and report back on the blood tests, but meantime this makes so much sense.

I have been denying this feeling in my left thigh for about 4 to 5 years. I no longer keep my laptop on my leg. I have now ventured into many other alternative sites to figure out this EMF problem.
Before you start thinking it's rheumatoid arthritis which it could be the real question is why do you have it? It could be because of oxalates. What are oxalates? I'll add a website at the end of this. It could be Lyme ? It could be an overload of EMFS? If your body is not able to handle the oxalates it could be an excess amount in your body which some say can cause hyper electromagnetic sensitivity.

Same here with my left thigh where the heat in my lap top is the most
I get tingling and burning sensation
I stopped using the lap top on my lap about 6 months ago or more
And since then my symptoms are improved
I bet it had caused some nerve damage that is healing now if thats possible

wow so happy to find this - i just figured out this wierd leg pain could be due to keeping the laptop on my lap...derr....what do you folks use to not have it on your lap? i'm asking bc one post said that they still felt some pain even with a laptop tray...

ugonyonyo said...

I am the person (ugonyonyo) who made a double decker tray to hold an extra fan below the laptop. However I found this just too bulky, thus as I sit in a large armchair I now use a single tray to give a 1cm clear space ( air must get to the laptop's fan) below the laptop and I place the tray on the arm of the chair. This arangement is fine - no heat on leg !

I have been experiencing weird dull pain in my upper thighs. I was thinking I had MS or some sort of nerve damage. My legs feel fatigued mainly my upper thighs. I try not to use my laptop on my lap since reading the many posts on line. I read somewhere that the radiation damage is even worse when it's plugged in. I'm convinced we are slowly microwaving our legs.

I started experiencing pain in my left thigh a few months ago in the same period I was sitting a lot on the sofa with my laptop on my lap. It started off as a twinge that would come and go but is now a sore, muscular type pain in the front middle of my left thigh. It's taken me a while to put two and two together, unfortunately! I'm having an MRI today to get a proper diagnosis but I'm now thinking this is what's happened. I have pain on walking and often sharp pains at night in bed localised in this spot. Hopefully, now that I've stopped doing this with my laptop, the symptoms will subside and the damage will not be permanent.

It's not a back issue

i would lay in bed with my laptop on my stomach and chest. i quit doing that after I noticed my sensitivity to EMF produced by my laptop.

you can blind fold me and place my laptop near any part of my body and within a few minutes, I can tell you exactly where the laptop is. I even start feeling a tightness and soreness wherever the laptop is.

alot of people may think this is cra cra talk, but even your cell phone can be a problem.

i still use the two things but i dont hold NOR do I let it lay on me anymore.

I BELIEVE IT'S THE HEAT. While reading the comments it looks like this has been a problem for many years by looking at the dates. While learning to use an ultrasound machine in college for therapeutic reasons a fellow classmate held it on my arm too long without keeping the head moving which resulted in the same deep pain that we are all describing. I too have deep muscle pain in my thighs more so on the left. I worked in home health for years using a laptop usually on my left leg as a table. My left thigh muscle is visibly smaller than the right thigh muscle. I even wake up during the night with extreme muscle pain when I have had to use my computer longer periods. Even with a pillow under my laptop, I have that deep aching pain. I believe this is heating the bone because it feels the same as the therapeutic ultrasound head left on an area too long that has a deep heating penetration. Hopefully, it isn't more than heat. This needs to be looked into more thoroughly. ANYONE HAVE ANSWERS YET?

Below is my information and experience for the class action, we were never warned by the cell and laptop industries about this danger. I expect a big payout: I am 100% in on the law suit.

Here is my experience. Laptop use 16 hours per day since 1987, no seriously. Started with a Compaq 386 'portable' more like a luggable (working artificial intelligence for general dynamics corporation electric boat division). followed by 20 years of Compaq laptop 16 hours per day working for the Thomson corporation. Followed by 9 years of apple MacBook pro and Compaq laptop approximately 6 or 8 hours per day. Add to that 4 hours per day of iPhone or Android Samsung on right leg 4 hours per day.

Now my symptoms are a nagging tingling pain in my right femor between knee and hip. Additionally I have low grade pain inn my lower gut and testicles/scrotum.

I think the class action needs to target both Compaq and Apple. Keep me up to date on the status of the class action law suit because I am 100 percent in, and I am ready and willing to testify.

Forget the tobacco companies, Compaq and Apple are the real enemy of the unsuspecting people. This has been a corporate cover-up for three decades now and counting.

I have an Acer Aspire E15 touch and I started experiencing extreme tingling and burning pain in my left upper thigh. It's gotten so bad that I can't even have my legs around my computer. I have to sit with my legs away or put it on the side of the couch or on pillows on my bed. Whenever my legs are around this laptop I feel extreme discomfort. If my legs come in contact with it it's even worse pain in both by thighs, feels like it's deep in the tissue.

@Chris Kennedy class action ? are u serious ? the laptops emit EMF. your cellphone emits EMF. heck even the wiring in your home or apartment emit EMF. your appliances emit EMF.

your class action will not be a waste of time.

did you know that in your cell phone instructions, it literally says not to carry your cell phone on your person ?

even my cell phone, if I hold it with one hand long enough, will start tingling.

ive found a wireless BT keyboard helps. I also stream cast my laptop output to my big screen TV.

thats the best solution Ive come up with so far.

Unknown said...

to all people following this...

its the EMF produced by all electronic devices(not just laptops).

so far a battery powered blue tooth keyboard on my lap or touching does not cause the
tingling to me.

a MRI is nothing but a large EMF producing device. I would not suggest a MRI.

Meralgia Paresthetica

I too now have a sharp burning pain along my upper right thigh due to chromebook use. Initially this pain was temporary but now appears permanent no doubt due to burnt nerve endings.

Initially when using the laptop I noticed an irritating type of heat on my right thigh which persisted even when using different types of insulation between the laptop and my leg. This suggests that my nerve irritation /damage was caused by electromagnetic radiation E.M.F. emitted by the wifi device. After researching several Youtube videos I can now confirm that my Acer wifi device that emits radiation within the microwave end of the spectrum is actually situated to the right of centre of my laptop in line with my right upper thigh.

Generally speaking both microwave ovens and most Wi-Fi operate on the same frequency, 2.4 GHz therefore without the correct shielding you could be cooking your legs which is a very serious problem laptop manufactures should be aware of.

ugonyonyo said...

I was able to avoid the irritation from my HP laptop ( from beneath it's cooling fan area) by building a double dekker tray (wood about 12cm apart) with an extra fan blowing up to the laptop.
The above was too bulky so I now place the laptop on top of my radio com tape player however, if the laptop is on when I'm using the radio is gives a HISS to any music which I play !

I, too, am grateful for this information. I had a serious attack late night in JAN. Talked to doc twice, no solution except muscle relaxer medication. I read this site about 6 weeks ago. Mayo Clinic site mentioned a nerve medication, Gabapentin. I had some in the house from my husbands surgery. Taking one dose a night made a huge difference (without the laptop on my lap!) A doc visit confirmed the diagnoses. Doc suggested two doses, 300 mil a day. Could go as high as 600 mil of necessary. I am finally able to sleep without pain! Bad news is that it may never go away completely.

WOW! I've been experiencing this leg pain (when using the laptop) for years, and from the onset, immediately deduced that my leg pains were a direct result of placing my laptop on my lap. In my case, it's more of a disturbing throbbing pain in my right leg, that feels as if something is wrong with my "nerves." So for the most part, I don't (or actually can't as it is too uncomfortable to work with the pain inducing laptop on my lap) work with it on my lap. I'll set it next to me or in front of me on a stool or something, but not on my body, as it actually is right now as I type this. When I do place the laptop on my lap, it typically takes no more than 5 minutes before the symptoms kick in. I use a Macbook Pro, but have used several other laptops when not using my own, and the effect is the same in each case.

It wasn't until today, as I was working that I finally decided to look this up. I'm amazed, yet not surprised to find this is a much more common experience than it should be. It is disturbing to say the least, and I am thankful this thread is here sharing the information. Please continue to keep us/each other informed on the outcome of any research, investigations, and on the lawsuit.

In my case, I'm trusting I have not suffered any permanent of debilitating damage as I have avoided using the laptop on my lap on a regular basis. There is no pain or discomfort when not using it, or when I'm using it but it is not placed on my lap. That decision has been out of necessity more than anything else (I've removed it from my lap since a moment ago as I'm writing this) because I can't TAKE it!

I hope everyone who has experienced this is -if not currently- ultimately, healthy and well.

My best friend, Laura, used a laptop for years for her work. In recent years she started working from home, with the laptop on her lap for many hours. Last summer she had leg pain and then a large bump appeared on her thigh directly above her right knee. They found a huge sarcoma (size of a "goose egg" that had developed and eaten 65% through her femur bone. The cancer metastases had also spread to surrounding bone, muscle, tissue. Because her femur had not yet snapped, they saved her leg by installing a titanium rod through the remaining femur, fastening it at hip and knee. She recovered well but is still dealing with the stage 4 cancer threat. It has cost her $150K out of pocket (after insurance) and she is still battling for her life, at a cost of $60K/year. Her employer of 27 years "restructured" her job away. Their laptop, her life.

Joan you are right. I think it is these laptops that use cadmium battery that cause some dangerous radiations which might lead to sarcoma. I have been feeling odd in my bones and i will never use a laptop on my laps again! Been using it 3 years on my laps

Since feeling the effects of the "radiation" I now place my laptop on top of my small (30X30X30 cm), Aiwa radio/tape player. I use this Aiwa as the amplifier for music etc found on the internet. However, as a radio the Awia picks up interference fom the lap top and I have to turn the treble down to mjn and find a position of the aerial rod where interfence is minimum. having the laptop's batteries in or out makes no differecnce.
There is no problem if I only use the Aiwa to amplify music etc from the lapyop.

I found your blog and I have experienced nearly all the symptoms described. I use a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015). In or around 2016 I found this effect when I put the laptop on my lap. Sharp intense pain on my thighs. The pain intensifies in less than 5 minutes until it is strong enough I have to put the laptop away. Initially I thought it was the heat generated by the laptop as suggested by several contributors. It is not. In my case I can put two pillows over my lap and I can still sense a tingling sensation that becomes painful. Sitting on the bed with my thighs open and setting the laptop over two pillows eliminates the tingling nearly immediately. I believe the problem is electromagnetic. I would suggest those with a 'solid state' disk to post if they have similar issues. I doubt it, but it will be informative. Funny or not, the pain also reaches into my testicles. I do not use the laptop in this manner and I think the issue needs to be investigated. EM effects on humans are difficult to document, and this thread is one of the longest and more consistent I have found out. People who work under high tension cables rarely have discomfort of this nature, but 60 Hz radiation may not be that harmful. Hard drives rotate between 75 to 175 Hz. It will be good to measure the radiation coming out of the laptops to narrow down the spectrum and inform consumer protection agencies.

I have a tingling sensation after using the laptop on my thigh but it does go away if I don't repeat this for a few weeks. can others tell me if they have had a recovery?

Hello all. I experienced the same sensation putting my phone on my thigh. I am coming to the conclusion that any device with a Wi-Fi connection, or cell phone connection, close to the femoral nerve will cause Meralgia Paresthetica. Perhaps a better name than "laptop induced" should be "Microwave Induced Meralgia Paresthetica" to identify the actual source. Run an experiment, use your laptop with the Wi-Fi off and see if you get the same pain. Do the same with your phone.

Good luck.

Hi ! Unsure if my last reply posted but I found this blog after suffering with this strange pain for a couple of days. I too have been using my MacBook Pro retina 13 early 2015 on my lap a lot over the last few days and I feel this can’t be a coincidence. I am going to be doing more research into this.

Hi !! I just come across this blog after suffering symptoms and being puzzled by it for a couple of days. Over the last few days I have been using my MacBook Pro retina 13 early 2015 (!) on my lap so I’m wondering if this is what has caused it for me too. I am wondering if I stop using the laptop on my lap will it go away so I will investigate this over the next few days. I hope it does as it is very uncomfortable. I am going to keep investigating this to see if anyone else has the same problem with this particular laptop.

Hi everyone,
I'm glad I found this thread. I don't feel so crazy now.
As with many other posters before me, I only need to have the laptop sitting on my lap for a few minutes before SERIOUSLY INTENSE pain arises in my thighs, hips and into my knees and I have NO CHOICE but to remove the laptop from my body, after which the pain will immediately begin to subside.
I don't understand why it is so difficult to find information on this 'phenomenon' and why doctors look at you like you're crazy when you seek their help with this...

Thought it might be worth mentioning, I use an HP Pavilion, usually whilst sitting propped up in bed and even with a tray or pillow under the laptop, this still occurs.

Hello. Has anyone of you who experienced femoral nerve Meralgia Paresthetica tried turning off the Wi-Fi on the laptop prior to laying it on their lap?

Hi there. I just tried using the laptop with the wifi off. Still had the same problem.. Happens within minutes. Am wondering if it is also causing the abnormalities I've been experiencing with my reproductive system because having the laptop on my lap causes pain in my ovaries also.. Sorry if TMI. Something is DEFINITELY not right. Surely more people have these experiences..

Hello everyone, sadly I am experiencing the same symptoms, I am working with an HP Probook Intel Core. I chronically place the laptop on my lap for 5 hours at a time for a year. For the last 7 days I have developed excruciating pain right femur and quadriceps. When I remove the lap top from my lap the pain subsides, and intensifies when I place the laptop back on my lap. Unfortunately now I have intermittent pain that continues. Out of curiosity I placed my Iphone on that area and was able to elicit the same strong pain response. I wonder if the heat from the lithium-ion batteries cause the localized pain and discomfort when placed on the body for a prolonged period of time. Empirically, the answer seems to be yes, it can.
